How to Vet a Wholesale Medical Distributor Before You Commit

Choosing a wholesale medical distributor is one of the highest-leverage procurement decisions a facility makes, and the headline unit price is the worst way to make it. A distributor that cannot fill the order reliably costs more in stockouts and emergency buys than it ever saves on price. Vet on the things that actually predict reliability.

Start with fill rate and lead times. Ask what percentage of orders ship complete and on time, and how the distributor performed through the last real demand spike. A partner that ships 99 percent complete on schedule is worth a premium over one a few cents cheaper that backorders half your line. Confirm the answer with a reference who orders at your volume.

Then the commercial terms. Net payment terms, volume pricing tiers, and — where relevant — GPO access or contract pricing determine the real cost of the relationship. A distributor offering net terms and tiered pricing on a consolidated buy frequently beats a GPO for a high-volume buyer, but you only know by running your actual spend against the terms.

Finally, catalog breadth and continuity. The point of a wholesale partner is consolidating categories under one accountable relationship, so confirm the distributor carries the breadth you need and can hold continuity through disruptions. Our wholesale medical distributor guide walks the full distributor-evaluation process end to end.

Vet on fill rate, terms, breadth, and continuity — not on the cheapest line on the quote. The right partner pays for itself in reliability.
