Getting Adult Brief Sizing and Absorbency Right the First Time
An adult brief that is the wrong size or the wrong absorbency is not a minor inconvenience — it is leaks, skin breakdown, a frustrated patient, and a return. Getting both right on the first order protects dignity, prevents complications, and controls cost. The framework is straightforward once you separate the two decisions.
Size first. Measure to the product’s sizing chart by body shape, not weight alone, because two patients at the same weight can need different sizes depending on build. A brief that is too large leaks at the legs; one too small chafes and humiliates. Treat fit as a clinical step with a tape measure, not a guess from a glance.
Then absorbency. Match the rating — light, moderate, heavy, or overnight — to the patient’s actual output and wear time. Over-spec and you pay for capacity nobody uses; under-spec and you are changing twice as often and still managing leaks. The right absorbency is where patient comfort and cost-per-use meet.
Our incontinence supplies buying guide covers the full incontinence line, but the first-order rule is two measurements: get the size from the body and the absorbency from the output and wear time. Nail both and returns drop while dignity rises.
Right size, right absorbency, first order. It is cheaper than the returns and far better for the patient.
